Blue Monday, a great song by New Order and a name for a day in the month when everyone is broke. As I look at my lovely purchases from the January sales and figure I'm too skint to wear them anywhere posh, I always console myself with my favourite thing, food, and of course things that involves bread. While bread takes a hammering from the weight loss brigade, it's important to remember that sweets, shop bought cakes, biscuits, crisps and beer are far more likely to turn you into a big pudding. Made with good bread like sourdough, rye or wholegrain, a sandwich is so comforting, especially when its full of bacon, lettuce and tomato! Yum
This week, beginning with Blue Monday (19 January), resolutions start to fade, money is tight, and morale is low.

A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that breakfast-skippers are more likely to have worse cholesterol levels and insulin sensitivity than breakfast-eaters. The study also showed that the breakfast-eaters consume about 100 fewer calories a day, compared with people who skip their morning meal, CBS News reported.

We’ve seen and heard it time and again. People who dodge breakfast not only eat more for the rest of the day but countless studies show they are more likely to be overweight, too.
